The Gardens

The Gardens

The Gardens is the redevelopment of a tight backland site in Stamford Hill to provide large family homes for the Orthodox Jewish Community. The development is particularly unusual for the high proportion of 3, 4 and 5 bedroom flats, maisonettes and houses, with up to ten bed spaces, to cater for the large families typical of this community. Part of the brief from Agudas Israel Housing Association was to enable the opportunity for residents to create a sukkah, or hut-like structure, for the Festival of Sukkot that takes place each October.

Designed around the mature trees on site, each dwelling therefore has either a terrace, balcony or garden, with terraces or balconies staggered or set back from each other to ensure that they are all open to the sky.

The large, extended families and close ties of the community mean that safe places to meet and congregate together outside are much valued. The courtyard spaces proposed have been designed with this in mind and are equally suitable for adults, children or families to gather together safely.

The proposed construction method is solid timber for floors and walls due to its sustainable characteristics, combined with inherent mass and speed of erection. Designed to Level 4 of the Code for Sustainable Homes, the development incorporates solar thermal water heating and photo voltaic energy generation.
