Bobby Moore Academy – Primary
The David Ross Education Trust Bobby Moore Academy comprises a new primary school and secondary school split over two sites. Located in the heart of the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, it is built to serve the growing local community. The 2FE primary school for 420 children is located along the Lee Navigation Canal to the west of the Olympic stadium.
The long, thin form of the building results from the complexities of the site with the canal on one side and two mains water pipes running through the centre. Between the building and the road, the landscaping and playgrounds act as a foreground to the school.
The building is divided into three contiguous parts. At either end are the Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 teaching spaces, opening onto their respective outdoor play areas. In the centre of the building are the shared facilities – main hall, dining, library and specialist teaching spaces. These spaces are available to the community after hours without impacting on the security of the rest of the school.
The building is clad with brick tiles with a two-tone palette, sharing an architectural language with the secondary school. Teaching spaces are naturally ventilated using hybrid thermal mixing units while large windows and double height spaces maximise daylight while providing views across the canal to one side and the stadium to the other. The school has been designed to accommodate future expansion upwards to cater for an additional class per year group.
