St Mary Magdalene C of E School Expansion Project

St Mary Magdalene C of E School Expansion Project

The expansion of the existing St Mary Magdalene C of E Primary School located on the southern corner of a wider development, is at the gateway to Greenwich Peninsula, London. The Peninsula Campus will provide an all-through C of E School including 26-place Nursery, standard 2FE Primary School (420 pupils), standard 6FE Secondary School (900 pupils) and 6th Form (300 pupils).

An extensive consultation process has been undertaken with the school and client team, wider stakeholder and local community to establish a common language and priorities.

The proposal is for a new first-rate educational environment that is inspiring, nourishing, safe, secure and connected to the outdoors and to the surroundings. The assembled whole forms a contemporary piece of architecture that bares a strong relationship to its site and local context, with reference to the future urban context of the Greenwich Peninsula.

The school consists of three clear, connecting forms, accessed via a shared main entrance located on the axis with the Central Park. The clear disposition of the two schools and the sports block reflects the ethos of an all-through school by locating the shared main entrance and the ‘heartspace’ of the school at the junction of all three elements. This central hub continues vertically through all floors and provides flexible staff, SEN and learning resource areas which will be shared between primary and secondary elements.

The predominant materials have been selected to ensure a robust and durable quality with a civic presence. A simple palette has been carefully considered to compliment the use of the building and the public realm.

The building’s sustainability strategy is driven by the London Plan and based on the ‘Be Lean, Be Clean and Be Green’ hierarchy to achieve 35% reduction of CO2 emissions.
