Brockhurst Care Home

Brockhurst Care Home

This 60-bed Care Home provides a welcoming, safe and secure environment with shared facilities, both internally and externally, that encourage participation from residents within the home together with staff, visitors, and the local community.

Rooms and communal areas are designed for a flexible approach to residents’ changing and developing needs, flexing between residential, dementia care and nursing care requirements to facilitate a spectrum of good quality care. Long corridors have been avoided and the use of colour, texture and themes have been used to assist way-finding throughout.

Bedrooms have been arranged in clusters on each floor providing small social environments for residents; particularly important for those living with dementia, who respond well to smaller, friendlier group environments. Bedrooms of those with dementia have been placed in an area that is secure to prevent unsupervised wandering and to ensure their safety. Bedrooms have been designed to allow a resident to ‘age in place’ (eg: allowing easy retrofit of an overhead hoist if staff assistance is needed with routine lifting), and for the easy retrofit of assistive technology in anticipation of advances in future technology. Window cill heights enable residents to see out when seated or in bed.

External facilities include an ‘activity walking route’ with areas for a feature garden, sensory garden and seating. Access to shade is also included. External spaces are designed to meet the needs of residents including those with physical, sensory and cognitive impairments and to foster relationships that are inter-generational. The provision of play and activity spaces enable young visitors to enjoy the space and to encourage their return to visit residents.
