Affinity Sutton Chelsea Redevelopment
Within an overall Masterplan for the William Sutton Estate this project comprises 42 residential units, in apartments and mews houses, combined with retail on an important and sensitive site in Chelsea.
The scheme is part of a major estate renewal, replacing substandard accommodation with a ‘tenure blind’ mix of affordable and private residential units, ranging from 1 bed apartments to larger flats and three bed mews houses. The building is on a sensitive site, adjacent on one side to the larger newbuild blocks along Cale Street and on the other to the parade of shops and flats which face onto Chelsea Green. As such the scheme forms a delicate transition between old and new.
The four storey brick façade to Cale Street is composed in a series of bays which relate in scale and proportion to the elegant late nineteenth century existing building next door. Above the parapet the building steps back over two more floors in a lighter weight cladding formed of metal and reconstituted stone fins. The mews houses to the rear have south facing terrace gardens and look out onto a shared garden courtyard.
The scheme is part of a full planning application for the whole estate and will form one of the later phases of the estate renewal.
