As the Olympics draw closer, Lord Coe has spoken of the ‘vital role’ that the Athletes’ Health Centre, designed by Penoyre & Prasad, will play in helping competitors achieve their best over the summer saying
“When athletes are preparing for the most important moment in their sporting careers, it’s vital they are in peak condition with all the support they need.”
The centre will operate 24 hours a day and demonstrates London 2012’s commitment to putting the needs of athletes at the heart of the games, with equipment the organisation describes as among some of the most sophisticated currently available in the UK.
Up to 200 athletes a day will be treated for a range of ailments and injuries including sprains and strains. The centre will also serve as a drugs testing centre identifying banned substances in use.
Once the games are over the centre will handed over to the NHS to serve the needs of the local community with a full range of primary healthcare services such as a GP surgery, a pharmacy and dentist.
