This new School of Acting building houses new accommodation and technical facilities for the University and the GSA. The development provides a new studio theatre, 15 new dance and drama studios – all fully environmentally controlled – along with 10 tutorial/practice rooms, changing and shower facilities, a café and an IT and resource area.
Arranged around two sides of a central atrium space, the new dance and drama studios gain natural light through the internal glazed screens overlooking the central space.
Clerestory glazing above the atrium floods natural light into the heart of the building. On the ground floor two of the studios are designed to be capable of opening up into one large performance space and the atrium combines a generous circulation space with the student café and refreshment area. The café area opens onto the new piazza formed in front of the building.
The new School of Acting building sits at the ‘gateway’ to the University campus, opposite the existing University sports centre.
“The University of Surrey are delighted with our new building for the Guildford School of Acting. The superb dance studios have been constructed to the highest standards and provide excellent teaching spaces.”
