Working in collaboration with Urban Practitioners and Colin Buchannan, we were commissioned by South Downs Health NHS Trust to prepare a robust evidence based development strategy and masterplan for the Brighton General Hospital (BGH) site for this key site in Brighton.
The masterplanning process involved widespread community consultation including many local stakeholder groups as well as the Health and Social care service providers identified in Brighton and Hove – City Wide Estate Strategy. This consultation was
centred on an Action Planning Day held on site, facilitated by Urban Practitioners with Penoyre & Prasad providing architectural and masterplanning guidance.
The central proposal of the City Wide Estate Strategy is to develop the potential of the BGH site, recognising the important historical context of the site with its Grade II listed Arundel building and landmark setting on the Brighton skyline. Also to consider the future healthcare provision for this site, part of the masterplan included focussing on the retention of healthcare on the site. This included a new polyclinic, GP facility, intermediate care centre and care home.
The developed masterplan now provides the key principles and a regeneration strategy for the future development of the Brighton General Hospital site and sets out proposals for buildings, spaces, movement and land use to match the aspirations and vision of all stakeholders. It is intended that the masterplan will form part of the Local Development Framework and be a major element of Supplementary Planning Document as part of Brighton & Hove City Council’s LDF.
