Details at the Soane

Gillian Horn, Partner at Penoyre & Prasad, will talk about ‘details’ at the Sir John Soane Museum on Wednesday 7th March 2018.

Gillian’s is the fourth talk in the series that considers the meaning of details in architecture and beyond, and will discuss ‘What is it we like about buildings? What is it about the way they look that we respond to positively or negatively?’

Gillian’s recent doctoral research on taste in contemporary housing reveals interesting findings on attitudes to detail and style. She will present the results of her extensive survey on visual attitudes to contemporary volume-built housing and discuss the relevance of detail in the appreciation of buildings. A 30 minute audience discussion will follow.

The series asks speakers to reflect on a particular detail – whether social, aesthetic, literary, environmental, political or architectural – and on the detail as intrinsic (rather than incidental) to our understanding of architecture.
