Mottistone Grove in Sutton, formerly Homelands, has now opened. Mottistone Grove in Sutton provides a new home for severely disabled adults, following the closure of Orchard Hill long stay hospital. For the first time the residents have their own flat, in addition to a shared lounge. A high level of care is also provided with gentle encouragement to the residents to fulfil their potential.
The ten specialised flats are set within a wooded landscape. The building has been designed to maximise the opportunity for visual connectivity to the gardens. The large terrace overlooks the sloping landscape and the trees can be seen through the large picture windows of the lounge as well as the bay windows of each flat, providing natural stimulation from the changing colours and light of the different seasons. Timber is used throughout the design to provide a warm and welcoming ambience and reflect the woodland surroundings.
Communal facilities are light and airy creating a range of homely and stimulating places for residents, some of whom have spent most of their lives in an institutional setting. Penoyre & Prasad worked with the carers and therapists to ease such a major move.
The building provides a 20% reduction in energy consumption and running costs through a roof mounted array of solar thermal panels.
